What is MCPCB?

The MCPCB (Metal Core PCB) is a PCB by metal core and copper to laminate which has good heat dissipation. In general, MCPCB board is composed of three layers which are the copper foil, the insulating layer and the metal-clad layer. Compared with FR4, the metal core PCB can minimize thermal resistance, which makes it has excellent thermal conductivity.

Classify by layer counts

Single Sided MCPCB Board

Single sided MCPCB board is the most common type. Compared with other types of metal core PCB board, its process is simple and its application is particularly extensive, often used in LED lighting products. It consists of three parts: the copper foil, the insulating layer and the metal-clad layer.

2 Layer MCPCB Board

2 Layer MCPCB board can layout components on both sides. The structure is relatively complex and consists of five structures: The circuit layer, the dielectric layer, the aluminum-clad layer, the dielectric layer, and the circuit layer. There are more resin filling processes and plating processes in MCPCB fabrication, which require twice drillings.

Multilayer MCPCB Board

In the high-performance power supply industry, multilayer MCPCB board are made of multilayer thermally conductive dielectrics. These structures have one or more layers of circuitry buried in a dielectric, with blind vias used as thermal vias or signal paths.

Flexible MCPCB Board

How To Make MCPCB Board?


CNC Drilling

The first step of MCPCB(Metal Core PCB) manufacturing is NC drilling, the drills are CNC-controlled following the Gerber drilling file.

 

Outer Layer Imaging

Photosensitive dry film is laminated on both sides of working panel, then exposure and development of the dry film to get the external circuitry.

 

Solder Mask And Silkscreen Printing

Solder mask coating will protect the copper and trace from mechanical and environmental damage. After the application of the solder mask printed, the legends are added onto the panel through screen printing of identification ink which is available in different colors.

 

Surface Finish

The excellent surface finished of Metal Core PCB should be solderable,reliable,cost effective and good shelf life.

Hot Air Solder Leveler(HASL), ENIG, and OSP are the most common surface finish because of their good electrical

 

Milling And V-CUT

The MCPCB board has been cycling in the final process of milling, CNC machine follows the MCPCB outline gerber to mill and V-CUT.

 

MCPCB Circuit Testing

The last step of MCPCB board manufacture is electronic testing to ensure all boards are reliable before outgoing. General samples and small batches of MCPCB boards are tested with flying probes, which can reduce the cost of making test frames, then shorten the delivery cycle. The mass-production MCPCB boards are tested by test tooling.
